Everyone in the workforce should be familiar with the fundamentals of Digital Marketing in a world where over 170 million people regularly use social media. Digital marketing can be summed up as the process of promoting a product via electronic media, such as the internet. As defined by the Digital Marketing Institute, it is the practice of reaching out to specific consumers and businesses via digital channels to market products and services.
Digital content is being consumed on a daily basis by people. It is only a matter of time before the digital market completely replaces traditional methods of marketing. Digital Marketing has a slew of advantages. It is more cost-effective to use digital media for marketing than traditional methods.
You can reach more people in a shorter period of time. Traditional marketing agencies and departments have lost a significant number of customers due to technological advancements. When it comes to digital marketing, tablets, smartphones and computers have become the most popular platforms for consumers.
Digital marketing is a relatively new term, having first appeared in the 1990s. Internet and the Web 1.0 platform brought the digital age into full swing. It was possible to find the information you were looking for on the Web 1.0 platform, but it was not possible to share this information on the Internet. After that, marketers around the world were confident in the digital platform. Because the internet had not yet been widely adopted, they were unsure if their strategies would be effective.
After the first clickable banner appeared in 1993, HotWired purchased a few banner ads to use in their advertising. Digital marketing began to take hold at this point in time. In 1994, new digital technologies entered the market as a result of this gradual shift. Yahoo was founded in the same year.
One year after its launch, Yahoo was dubbed "Jerry Yang's Guide to the World Wide Web" after its founder, Jerry Yang. In response, the digital marketing industry underwent a major shift, with companies focusing on increasing search engine rankings on their websites. More search engines and tools like HotBot and LookSmart were introduced in 1996.
Google was founded in 1998. The MSN search engine was launched by Microsoft, and Yahoo launched its web search service. Internet bubble burst two years later, and smaller search engines were either left behind or wiped out, creating more room for larger search engines such as Google and Yahoo. In 2006, search engine traffic reached 6.4 billion unique visitors in a single month, sparking the first major boom in digital marketing. Microsoft didn't want to be left behind, so it shelved MSN in favor of Live Search, a direct competitor to Google and Yahoo.
In the wake of the advent of Web 2.0, people began to take an active role in their online experience rather than simply browsing the web. Web 2.0 facilitated user-to-user and business-to-business communication. The internet began to be given monikers like'super information highway.' Information flow volumes increased dramatically as a result, including digital marketing channels, and online advertising and marketing generated $2.9 billion in the US alone by 2004.
Social networking sites popped up quickly after that. MySpace and Facebook were the first two social networking sites to emerge. A number of businesses realized that all the new websites that were springing up were beginning to open up new marketing avenues. A new chapter in the history of business began when new opportunities arose. They needed new approaches to promoting their brands and making use of the social networking platform now that they had more resources at their disposal.
The advent of the cookie ushered in a new era of digital marketing. Advertisers were looking for new ways to profit from the technology's infancy. The tracking of frequent internet users' browsing habits and usage patterns for the purpose of customizing promotions and marketing collateral to their preferences was one such technique. Users' habits were logged in the first cookie. Today, cookies are coded in a variety of ways to allow marketers a variety of ways to collect real-world user information.
Customers can now access digitally marketed products at any time. According to Marketingtechblog's 2014 data, the most popular online activity in the United States was posting on social media. It is estimated that the average American spends 37 minutes per day on social media. Facebook is used by 99 percent of digital marketers, Twitter by 97 percent, Pinterest by 69 percent, and Instagram by 59 percent. 70 percent of B2C marketers have gotten new customers from Facebook. According to a recent study, 67% of Twitter users are more likely to purchase products from brands they follow on the social network. On Pinterest, a whopping 83.8 percent of luxury brands have an account. For marketers, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are the most popular social networks.
Because of this, the digital market is constantly changing. They must find ways to keep up with this shift in technology. Search Engine Algorithms are constantly changing, so they must be able to keep up with the latest trends and developments in the industry. In the end, no one can afford to fall behind in this race.
Interested in learning more about digital marketing? When Google saw an opportunity to expand, it launched AdWords, which are three-line ads that appear at the top or right of search results, and AdSense, a cost-per-click advertising scheme. To become an important player in the world of business, Google realized that they could analyze the content they received and then target ads based on user interests.
